Armchair Travels: Quebec

Quebec's Chateau Frontenac

Chateau Frontenac

This is the first in a new Wednesday feature on places I’ve been, places I love, and places I’d love to visit.

I’m celebrating the re-release of my French & Indian War historical romance, written under my real name, Linda McLaughlin. So today’s visit is to Quebec, one of the settings used in Rogue’s Hostage.

When I was writing the book, my husband and I took a vacation to Quebec so I could do some research, and I fell in love with the charming old city. Since I was working in the travel industry at the time, I got us a discount on a room at Chateau Frontenac, the venerable Canadian Railway hotel. Good news was, we got a discount. Bad news? We think they gave us the smallest room in the place with an alley view. Oh, well, you get what you pay for.

In any case, we didn’t spend much time in the room, since we were far more interested in wandering the streets, taking pictures of the old houses and the fort and battlefield. On the last day we took a boat ride on the St. Lawrence for the spectacular views of the city and countryside. What a beautiful area!

Sensual Historical Romance

His hostage…

In 1758 the Pennsylvania frontier is wild, primitive and dangerous, where safety often lies at the end of a gun. Mara Dupré’s life crumbles when a French and Indian war party attacks her cabin, kills her husband, and takes her captive. Marching through the wilderness strengthens her resolve to flee, but she doesn’t count on her captor teaching her the meaning of courage and the tempting call of desire.

Her destiny…

French lieutenant Jacques Corbeau’s desire for his captive threatens what little honor he has left. But when Mara desperately offers herself to him in exchange for her freedom, he finds the strength to refuse and reclaims his lost self-respect. As the shadows of his past catch up to him, Jacques realizes that Mara, despite the odds, is the one true key to reclaiming his soul and banishing his past misdeeds forever.

Egg-cerpt Exchange: Under His Wings

  • Posted on February 21, 2013 at 1:00 am

Egg-cerpt Logo

I’m thrilled to welcome Anna Bayes as my guest for the 2013 Egg-cerpt Exchange. She is the author of Under His Wings, a M/M/F menage love story, part of Torquere’s New Year New Experiences line.

New Year cover

Blurb:

Bonnie thought Matt was everything she ever wanted: boyishly charming, understanding and exciting. Then she realized that he had another lover: Sean, an artistic, intensely jealous and handsome man. She tries, and fails to accept herself as the barely tolerated female lover. On New Year’s Eve, she demands a meeting amongst the three. The confrontation sparks dangerous rage, and something else with an entirely different heat level: steamy desire. Can she bring about a reconciliation satisfactory to everyone involved as she surrenders to her passion?

Available from Torquere Press.

Excerpt:

As I stood before my reflection in the mirror this morning, I tried to rehearse my request to Matt. I repeated it many times, looking into my eyes: the round, dark brown pupils returning my gaze unconvincingly. I shook my hair loose, and reasoned with myself again. If all Matt’s talk about my importance is only empty words to keep me, then he is a lying bastard, and I am better off without him. I tried to say it aloud with conviction, but my voice betrayed me; I sounded like a frightened, disappointed little girl. I know logically that I can live without him, but loving him has become such an integral, necessary part of my life; I am not sure I could stop, even if we parted.

5 pm. Matt took my hand as I closed my shop early for the day, kissed it and buried it in the large pocket in his jacket. I love how my hand fits snugly in his; it is as if all my body parts have been tailor-made to suit him, and melt into him. I concentrated on staring at the toes of my boots, mustering up my courage, then I looked squarely into his eyes, and said, “I want Sean to meet me.” I had initially practiced declaring in a crescendo, “I refuse to be hidden like an undignified whore. I am not a filler between Sean and other things in your life. I need him to acknowledge me as a person. I demand his respect,” but this part of the speech became stuck in my throat. Matt looked at me, dumbfounded, until I almost started to believe that I had delivered my full speech, after all. Then he clenched his teeth, tightened his grip on my hand, and said, “Yes, you deserve better than this.”

The taxi ride to his apartment was a blur. The original plan for tonight, it being New Year’s Eve, had been that Matt would spend the early evening with me, then return home to Sean for dinner and to count down to 2013 over sizzling sex. Sean is not there when we arrive at the apartment, and we sit on the sofa to wait. Matt looks frighteningly dashing: his eyes blazing, his whole body tense, clearly deep in thought, preparing for something. He looks up as the sound of keys in the lock announces Sean’s return. “Hey you…” Sean’s lilting voice stops in its tracks as he opens the door wider and sees me seated next to his lover.

Blog Hop Central

Welcome to the Something New, Something Naughty Blog Hop!

The something new and naughty in my part of the world is the reissue of How To Woo… A Reluctant Bride, my romantic Victorian short story.

The Victorians are known for being prim and proper, but appearances can be deceiving, and often were. Despite the veneer of gentility, prostitution was legal and widely available, esp. in London. Gentlemen still had their mistresses and frustrated ladies went to see the physician or midwife for treatment of hysteria, i.e. a hand job, until the much welcomed invention of the electric vibrator. (If you haven’t seen the movie Hysteria, I do recommend it for a good depiction of the times, as well as a charming and funny film.)

The sleazy tabloid papers came on the scene in the 1880′s and scandal suddenly became news, and the prolific author, Anonymous, penned a string of pornographic novels with titles like Three Nights in a Moorish Harem. Talk about a male fantasy! In 1883, the famous explorer Sir Richard Burton, translated the Kama Sutra from Sanskrit to English where it was quietly published by the Kama Shastra Society and no doubt sold in a brown paper wrapping.

The Kama Sutra plays an important part in my latest release when the hero uses it to woo his reluctant bride.

A marriage contract, nothing more…until darkly handsome Evan Channing and demure Lydia Blatchford meet. Yet the rules are simple for an arrangement such as theirs. There should be no misunderstanding, no illusions of anything more.

But the rules are about to change when Evan is gifted with an intriguing copy of the Kama Sutra.  He sets out to win his high-born bride, blending seductive heat with exotic lessons in love-making. With a little help from Sir Richard Burton’s new, provocative translation of ancient wisdom on seduction and arousal, the cold marriage bed of an arranged union is about to combust into a blazing flame of desire.

(Previously published under the title Love… By the Book)

Short Excerpt:

After dinner Evan wandered around his bedroom, clad in his new blue and white striped pajamas, wondering how much longer he should wait before going to his new bride. He’d never felt so unsure yet so filled with anticipation. He pictured her in the red sari Zahra had given her, the cloth draped seductively around her curves. His cock was already partially hard just thinking about what was to come.

At the same time he was more nervous than he’d ever been in his life. It wasn’t as if it were his first time, but every woman he’d been with had been a prostitute, so he was never sure if their cries of pleasure were real or feigned. After all, they were paid to please their clients. But Lydia was a highborn lady, and a virgin. He just hoped he could make this pleasant enough for her she’d let him visit her room again. And again…

He glanced at his copy of the Kama Sutra. The book recommended waiting ten days before consummating the marriage. Bloody hell. He could no more wait ten more days to make her his wife than he could fly to the moon. He wanted her. Now. Badly.

Taking a deep breath, he walked to the door between their rooms and knocked. He let out his breath when she bade him enter. He found her perched on the edge of the bed in the red sari, but looking pale and apprehensive.

He sat on the side of the bed and took her hands in his. “You wore the red sari. I wasn’t sure if you would.”

She gave him a sheepish look. “I almost didn’t. At first, I couldn’t figure out how to put it on again, but I finally figured it out. I think.”

“Stand up and let me see.”

She rose and turned in a circle, all the while clutching the waist with one hand. “I don’t know how well it will stay on.”

“No matter,” he said, kissing one hand. “I am looking forward to removing it.”

“Evan,” she exclaimed.

He raised an eyebrow. “What did your mother tell you to expect on your wedding night?”

Lydia flushed and glanced away. “Very little actually. She said to lie back and let you take charge.”

He sighed and reached out to touch her face and turn it to him. “I’d really prefer it if you participated in what we’re about to do. It is much more pleasurable that way. Like it was when you kissed me back, like you did at Zahra’s. And in the carriage.”

She gave him a tentative smile. “If that’s what you want.”

“What I want is you naked and writhing in my arms.”

A Victorian Christmas

My latest release, How To Woo… A Reluctant Bride, takes place in the summer of 1885, but since it’s now December, I got to wondering what Lydia and Evan’s first Christmas might be like. Many of our most treasured Christmas traditions – Christmas cards, lighted trees – didn’t become widely popular until the Victorian era, largely thanks to Charles Dickens’ classic A Christmas Caroland Prince Albert introducing German traditions to Britain, including the Christmas tree.

But back to Lydia and Evan. They could stay in town and celebrate quietly, but I think they’d hop on a train and go to her childhood home in the country. Thanks to Lydia’s marriage settlement, the Blatchford family fortunes are in better shape, so they will be celebrating in style this season. The manor house will sport wreaths and garlands of evergreen, holly, ivy and mistletoe.

Lady with muff

If the weather is cold enough, there might be skating on a frozen pond or sleigh rides to the village or a neighbors’ house.

Cook will roast a fatted goose for dinner with all the trimmings, topped off by the traditional plum pudding. The servants will have to work preparing and serving dinner, but there will be treats for them, plus a day off on December 26 called Boxing Day.

In the evening, the family can gather around the piano while Lydia plays Christmas carols for all to sing. There are no little ones to dream of sugar plums yet, but next year things will be different. Lydia has a little secret to confide to Evan.

If you’re curious as to how Evan won over his Reluctant Bride, check out the excerpt on the book page.

My Question: Does Boxing Day take place on Dec. 26?
