Sneak Peek Sunday: Lydia

Sneak Peek Sunday

Welcome to Sneak Peek Sunday. Once again I’m sharing six paragraphs from the beginning of How To Woo… A Reluctant Bride, my sexy historical short story, set in London in June 1885. In last week’s snippet, Evan was caught lusting over his bride-to-be at their engagement party. This week’s mini-excerpt shows Lydia’s reaction to his intent stare, and her mixed feelings about their upcoming union.

Reluctant Bride coverArmed with a copy of the Kama Sutra, Evan sets out to seduce his reluctant bride into passionate surrender.

Today’s snippet:

She turned to check her appearance in the drawing room mirror, an excuse to avoid his intense gaze. Earlier her maid had somehow managed to shape her normally long, straight, blonde hair into a curly, fashionable style. It would not last the evening, if experience were any guide, but for the moment it looked good. Her visage stared back, skin wan, eyes wary. What did he think of her appearance tonight? Despite her deep resentment at being forced to wed to save her family from ruin, she couldn’t help but worry what he would think.

“Stop fussing, you look lovely tonight.”

Lydia turned and smiled at her sister Phoebe, who truly was beautiful in her pale pink gown. “As do you.”

“But I am not the one being devoured by a pair of dark eyes.”

Lydia felt a flush on her cheeks. No man had ever looked at her with lust in his eyes, and she found it both alarming and exhilarating. “Then it is not my imagination?”

Phoebe laughed softly. “No, dearest, your intended can barely take his eyes off you. I begin to envy you your merchant prince.”

Sneak Peek Sunday: Engagement

Sneak Peek Sunday

This is my first time doing a Sneak Peek Sunday. Today I’m sharing six paragraphs from the beginning of How To Woo… A Reluctant Bride, my sexy historical short story, set in London in June 1885. In this snippet, Evan lusts over his bride-to-be at their engagement party.

Reluctant Bride cover

A marriage contract, nothing more…until darkly handsome Evan Channing and demure Lydia Blatchford meet. Yet the rules are simple for an arrangement such as theirs. There should be no misunderstanding, no illusions of anything more.

Lydia Blatchford wants the kind of love and romance she reads in books. Fortunately, she didn’t specify which book. And her darkly handsome groom has just the right one: the Kama Sutra.

Today’s snippet:

Evan Channing stood next to the fireplace in Lord Blatchford’s parlor and studied his fiancée as she sat on the settee talking to his mother. Lydia Blatchford wore blue tonight, bringing out the color of her pale eyes. She looked beautiful, yet untouchable, in her fashionable silk gown. The low-cut bodice revealed the smooth white skin of her shoulders and a hint of cleavage. The lines of the gown showed off her firm breasts and small waist, and the bustle emphasized her rounded hips.

When she looked up, he smiled at his intended across the room. Her lips curved slightly in answer and a blush stole up her face, adding color to her porcelain complexion before she turned away. Tonight her dark blonde hair had been curled into a fashionable upswept hairstyle, softening her appearance. When he’d met her before, her long mane had been pulled back into a bun. He wasn’t sure the curls suited her, but of course, he’d prefer to see her hair down, spread around her on his bed. His pulse raced at the thought she’d soon be his.

He could hardly wait to peel off her layers of clothing, revealing the woman underneath, her smooth skin and generous curves. Taller and larger boned than most women, she’d fit perfectly against his own lanky frame. Perhaps he’d find an opportunity to steal a kiss tonight. Surely that was allowed to an engaged couple.

“Stop staring.”

Evan started and turned to see Lydia’s brother Harry standing beside him. “Sorry.”

Harry raised a blond eyebrow. “You should be. If you weren’t already betrothed to my sister I’d have to call you out for the way you were undressing her with your eyes.”

How To Woo… A Reluctant Bride is available for only 99 cents at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, iTunes, Kobo and Smashwords.

Add to your “to read” shelf at Goodreads or Shelfari.

Next week I’ll share Lydia’s reaction to Evan. Click here to read more Sneak Peeks.

Armchair Travels: Quebec

Quebec's Chateau Frontenac

Chateau Frontenac

This is the first in a new Wednesday feature on places I’ve been, places I love, and places I’d love to visit.

I’m celebrating the re-release of my French & Indian War historical romance, written under my real name, Linda McLaughlin. So today’s visit is to Quebec, one of the settings used in Rogue’s Hostage.

When I was writing the book, my husband and I took a vacation to Quebec so I could do some research, and I fell in love with the charming old city. Since I was working in the travel industry at the time, I got us a discount on a room at Chateau Frontenac, the venerable Canadian Railway hotel. Good news was, we got a discount. Bad news? We think they gave us the smallest room in the place with an alley view. Oh, well, you get what you pay for.

In any case, we didn’t spend much time in the room, since we were far more interested in wandering the streets, taking pictures of the old houses and the fort and battlefield. On the last day we took a boat ride on the St. Lawrence for the spectacular views of the city and countryside. What a beautiful area!

Marching through the wilderness strengthens her resolve to flee, but she doesn’t count on her captor teaching her the meaning of courage and the tempting call of desire.

Her destiny…

French lieutenant Jacques Corbeau’s desire for his captive threatens what little honor he has left. But when Mara desperately offers herself to him in exchange for her freedom, he finds the strength to refuse and reclaims his lost self-respect. Book Review Club: The Scarletti Curse

  • Posted on February 6, 2013 at 1:52 am

My apologies for not blogging much in January. I had eye surgery in mid-January which put me behind schedule. I was very glad I had checked out some downloadable audiobooks from the public library to listen to while I was recovering. This was the first one I chose.

The Scarletti Curse

Scarletti Curse audio

Cover for Audiobook

by Christine Feehan
Love Spell Books, 2000
Romance Audiobook read by Rebecca Cook
Author’s website

A classic Gothic tale, though written in third person omniscient point of view rather than the traditional first person. All the Gothic conventions are here: the young, innocent heroine, the older, domineering and mysterious hero, the forbidding house, in this case an Italian pallazzo, the dark atmosphere and sense of impending doom.

Nicoletta is a young peasant woman with a special gift for healing. She is sweet-natured and free-spirited, used to running barefoot over the hills of her homeland, but at the same time dedicated to her healing arts. When she and her guardian, Maria Pia, are called to attend the Scarletti family at the Pallazzo Della Morte (Palace of Death), as the peasants call it, she meets the dark and brooding Don Giovanni Scarletti. He and his little niece Sophie as ill from tainted soup. Was it poisoned? If so, who was the target?

Original Paperback Cover

Original Paperback Cover

She resists, even attempting to run away, but the don will have his bride. She goe
s reluctantly to the pallazzo, a dark frightening place with a reputation for destroying women. A number of them have been murdered, from Giovanni’s grandmother to several maids, including Nicoletta’s own mother. The pallazzo is full of secrets and dangers and Giovanni fears he cannot protect her. But who is safe in the Pallazzo Della Morte?

The danger and tension build to a dramatic climax that includes the requisite confession by the villain. Gothic fans will love the atmosphere and the satisfying romance. Rebecca Cook’s narration is delightful.

The only criticism I have, other than some occasional overheated prose, is that I didn’t get a good sense of time and place. I could not tell you what part of Italy the story takes place in nor which century.  The audio cover didn’t help as the clothing pictured looked quite modern. The original paperback cover gives more of a Renaissance look, which I think is close to the period. It was clearly pre-Industrial Revolution, but that was as close as I could pin down. But I imagine most readers will not care.

Blog Hop Central

Welcome to the Something New, Something Naughty Blog Hop!

The something new and naughty in my part of the world is the reissue of How To Woo… A Reluctant Bride, my romantic Victorian short story.

The Victorians are known for being prim and proper, but appearances can be deceiving, and often were. Despite the veneer of gentility, prostitution was legal and widely available, esp. in London. Gentlemen still had their mistresses and frustrated ladies went to see the physician or midwife for treatment of hysteria, i.e. a hand job, until the much welcomed invention of the electric vibrator. (If you haven’t seen the movie Hysteria, I do recommend it for a good depiction of the times, as well as a charming and funny film.)

The sleazy tabloid papers came on the scene in the 1880′s and scandal suddenly became news, and the prolific author, Anonymous, penned a string of pornographic novels with titles like Three Nights in a Moorish Harem. Talk about a male fantasy! In 1883, the famous explorer Sir Richard Burton, translated the Kama Sutra from Sanskrit to English where it was quietly published by the Kama Shastra Society and no doubt sold in a brown paper wrapping.

The Kama Sutra plays an important part in my latest release when the hero uses it to woo his reluctant bride.

Blurb:Reluctant Bride cover

A marriage contract, nothing more…until darkly handsome Evan Channing and demure Lydia Blatchford meet. Yet the rules are simple for an arrangement such as theirs. There should be no misunderstanding, no illusions of anything more.

But the rules are about to change when Evan is gifted with an intriguing copy of the Kama Sutra.  He sets out to win his high-born bride, blending seductive heat with exotic lessons in love-making. With a little help from Sir Richard Burton’s new, provocative translation of ancient wisdom on seduction and arousal, the cold marriage bed of an arranged union is about to combust into a blazing flame of desire.

(Previously published under the title Love… By the Book)

Short Excerpt:

After dinner Evan wandered around his bedroom, clad in his new blue and white striped pajamas, wondering how much longer he should wait before going to his new bride. He’d never felt so unsure yet so filled with anticipation. He pictured her in the red sari Zahra had given her, the cloth draped seductively around her curves. His cock was already partially hard just thinking about what was to come.

At the same time he was more nervous than he’d ever been in his life. It wasn’t as if it were his first time, but every woman he’d been with had been a prostitute, so he was never sure if their cries of pleasure were real or feigned. After all, they were paid to please their clients. But Lydia was a highborn lady, and a virgin. He just hoped he could make this pleasant enough for her she’d let him visit her room again. And again…

He glanced at his copy of the Kama Sutra. The book recommended waiting ten days before consummating the marriage. Bloody hell. He could no more wait ten more days to make her his wife than he could fly to the moon. He wanted her. Now. Badly.

Taking a deep breath, he walked to the door between their rooms and knocked. He let out his breath when she bade him enter. He found her perched on the edge of the bed in the red sari, but looking pale and apprehensive.

He sat on the side of the bed and took her hands in his. “You wore the red sari. I wasn’t sure if you would.”

She gave him a sheepish look. “I almost didn’t. At first, I couldn’t figure out how to put it on again, but I finally figured it out. I think.”

“Stand up and let me see.”

She rose and turned in a circle, all the while clutching the waist with one hand. “I don’t know how well it will stay on.”

“No matter,” he said, kissing one hand. “I am looking forward to removing it.”

“Evan,” she exclaimed.

He raised an eyebrow. “What did your mother tell you to expect on your wedding night?”

Lydia flushed and glanced away. “Very little actually. She said to lie back and let you take charge.”

He sighed and reached out to touch her face and turn it to him. “I’d really prefer it if you participated in what we’re about to do. It is much more pleasurable that way. Like it was when you kissed me back, like you did at Zahra’s. And in the carriage.”

She gave him a tentative smile. “If that’s what you want.”

“What I want is you naked and writhing in my arms.”

A Victorian Christmas

My latest release, How To Woo… A Reluctant Bride, takes place in the summer of 1885, but since it’s now December, I got to wondering what Lydia and Evan’s first Christmas might be like. Many of our most treasured Christmas traditions – Christmas cards, lighted trees – didn’t become widely popular until the Victorian era, largely thanks to Charles Dickens’ classic A Christmas Caroland Prince Albert introducing German traditions to Britain, including the Christmas tree.

But back to Lydia and Evan. They could stay in town and celebrate quietly, but I think they’d hop on a train and go to her childhood home in the country. Thanks to Lydia’s marriage settlement, the Blatchford family fortunes are in better shape, so they will be celebrating in style this season. The manor house will sport wreaths and garlands of evergreen, holly, ivy and mistletoe.

Lady with muff

If the weather is cold enough, there might be skating on a frozen pond or sleigh rides to the village or a neighbors’ house.

Cook will roast a fatted goose for dinner with all the trimmings, topped off by the traditional plum pudding. The servants will have to work preparing and serving dinner, but there will be treats for them, plus a day off on December 26 called Boxing Day.

In the evening, the family can gather around the piano while Lydia plays Christmas carols for all to sing. There are no little ones to dream of sugar plums yet, but next year things will be different. Lydia has a little secret to confide to Evan.

If you’re curious as to how Evan won over his Reluctant Bride, check out the excerpt on the book page.

My Question: Does Boxing Day take place on Dec. 26?
